Throughout 2017 and into the first half of 2018, several opportunities for input will be provided, either online or in-person. Draft plan products will be posted on this website as they begin to emerge.

Notifications for upcoming Planning Commission meetings will be shared, and materials prepared for Planning Commission review will also be shared on this website.


Past Events

  • Open Houses and Public Hearing – April 30, 2018; May 7, 2018; and May 16, 2018
    Two open houses and a public hearing were held on Monday April 30, and Monday May 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., allowing the public an opportunity to review the Plan. The public hearing was conducted by the Planning Commission on May 16, at 7:00 p.m. All the events were held in the City Council chambers at the Apple Valley Municipal Center, 7100 147th Street West.
  • Planning Commission Meeting – July 19, 2017
    The Apple Valley Comprehensive Plan is progressing. The City Planning Commission, key stakeholders, and local citizens continued to provide vital feedback through June and July. At this stage of the process the City is reviewing residential density characteristics, working to maximize the potential of infill parcels, and exploring potential redevelopment strategies. An open discussion of City and regional expectations occurred at the Planning Commission meeting on July 19. The Commission framed the community vision for the Fischer Mine redevelopment site. As analysis continues, coordination with the Metropolitan Council will ensure that local and regional objectives are balanced and achievable.     Recommended updates to existing downtown design guidelines have also been reviewed, and these early, draft recommendations have been discussed with the Planning Commission.  These recommendations will evolve as city staff and Planning Commissioners have more time to consider them.     Next Steps:
    Meetings with various stakeholders who provide services within Apple Valley took place in July, and others will be completed over the next month or two.

    Draft land use plan alternatives will be reviewed with the Apple Valley Planning Commission at their meeting on Wednesday, September 20, 2017.


  • Planning for Resilient Cities Workshop – June 27, 2017
    Co-sponsored by the Alliance for Sustainability, Dakota County, and City of Apple Valley.
  • Planning Commission Meeting – June 21, 2017
    Highlights of the updated Community Context Chapter of the Imagine Apple Valley 2040 were presented to the Apple Valley Planning Commission on Wednesday, June 21st at a regularly scheduled Planning Commission meeting. Planning Commissioners were able to discuss the information presented and ask questions of the Planning Department and consultant team. See the presentation here.

    Home & Garden Expo 2017 – April 8, 2017
    City staff and members of the consultant team kicked off the Comprehensive Plan Update activities with a City of Apple Valley booth at the Home and Garden Expo. We received a lot of positive and meaningful feedback about Imagine Apple Valley 2040.

  • Kick-off Meeting with Consultant Team – March 14, 2017
    City staff met with consultants for the elements of the plan to discuss coordination, schedule and next steps.
  • Planning Commission Visioning Meeting – March 30, 2017
    A presentation to the Planning Commission provided background information on comprehensive planning in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area and an overview of the planning process between March, 2017 and December, 2018. (Download PDF 4.5MB)
